Ontario's Festival Country
Lake Ontario and Lake Erie make the peninsula an
ideal destination for the sport fisherman. Some of the province's most popular
tournaments also take place in the region. Lake trout, several species of
salmon, walleye, bass and muskie are abundant. One of the more popular fishing
holes is at Eastern Lake Erie off Port Colborne, as well as Gravelly Bay, also
near Port Colborne. In winter, the ice fishing is just as popular, and several
charter operations are also available.
This region stretches in an arc around the end of
Lake Ontario from Toronto down to the Niagara River. The name "Golden
Horseshoe" is often applied to this area nearest to the lake. The region
stretches inland to Waterloo as well. The western basin of the lake is occupied
by the city of Hamilton, proceeding south and east from here the population
gets sparser and gives way to smaller towns scattered along the lake and shores
of the Niagara River. |
